Summer
How is your summer? is it special? different?
Depending where you come from, you will make a quickly link between summer and..
- TV and their summer stupid programs
- Swimming pool
- Cold beer
- Ice cream
- Bar next to the beach with umbrellas to block the sun
- Siesta
- Beach
- Your parents' village
- Village's biggest parties
You know that there is a word that will blow away all these things listed above and the word is... "September".
September* means: raining, the preparation to come back to school, to work and hoping that next months won't be so cold and you won't need to stay at home every evening, but you know that you are already in Autumn and ... Winter will be coming soon.
*School break in Spain is July and August.
Coming back to the list above, many of those things brings you good memories from past summers, especially from the childhood. Probably one day you even thought that it will be nice to have summer all year long.
If you want to enjoy winning a match, first you need to know what does it mean to lose the game. With this I only want to say that the fact that we have some special feelings when Spring and Summer are coming is only because we had a hard winter or even worse, very cold, snowy and dark winter.
Why do I mention this? It isn't like this everywhere?. I want to start the topic to link with the main theme of the blog: Singapore. The place where always is summer and the city where you can only find coats in winter shops for people who go on holidays overseas... (actually, we can already start using the new stuff in the shops because the temperature in those shops makes you feel and Eskimo).
After more than one year living here, it is hard to feel any change regarding weather or time passing by. During this time the temperature has never changed and the sunlight hours neither. The only thing I could notice is that the body is already used to and only from time to time the hot weather annoys more than usual.
From the thoughts above, the only thing that I'm trying to say is that if we sometimes think that we would like to have 12 months of summer, then this will take all the romance out and summer will no longer be an special season. Especially those little things that ensure that you are not in winter like the wet bikini/shorts from the river or sea, the annoying sand in the flip-flops or even the smell from the burning bonfires at the shortest night of the year...
Then, if you are living in a 4 season country, remember to enjoy those three months and don't forget about those friends who live in different summer that you may think...
ps. This thought is quite common among foreigners who come from non-tropical countries. Few weeks ago we meet a Spanish guy who has been living in Singapore for the last 13 years and to the question "What do you miss from Spain?"... he answered.. "the 4 seasons that makes you feeling that the time is passing by"...
Below: Some pictures from Rabasada Beach (Tarragona, Spain), where probably I learnt crawling, later I built my first sandcastles and holes in the water, as a I spent teenager hours and hours playing voleyball and finally when there was no other alternative during summer than doing something profitable I had the great chance to work renting water-boats for 2 seasons. What a nice memories!
